Over/under dropping odds are totals prices that shorten before a match: an under 3.0 goals falling from 1.95 to 1.81, or a basketball total moving from 221.5 to 218.5. A totals drop is the market changing its estimate of how much scoring there will be, not who wins. At Pinnacle it usually follows team news, weather or respected money.
Totals are the market where the result does not matter, only the volume of goals, points or games. That makes them read differently from a match-winner drop: a falling under can come from a missing striker, a slower pace, rain or a cautious tactical setup, and the over on the other side drifts by the same amount. This guide covers how totals move in each sport, the difference between a price move and a line move, and how to tell signal from noise. For the general theory, see what dropping odds are.
Definition. An over/under dropping odd is a shortening price on one side of a totals market (over or under a number of goals, points, games or rounds). It is measured in implied probability points: 100 ÷ new odds minus 100 ÷ old odds. Under 3.0 from 1.95 to 1.81 is +3.97 points.
Which sports have over/under dropping odds?
Every sport with a totals market. The number changes; the logic does not.
- Football: total goals. Lines at 2.5, 2.75, 3.0 and so on. Together with the Asian handicap, the main goals total is where most sharp football money goes.
- Basketball: total points. Lines in the 200s for the NBA. Totals move in whole points, often several at once on injury news; see basketball dropping odds.
- Tennis: total games. A games total moves with fitness and match-up news; a player expected to win easily pushes the under. More in tennis odds movement.
- MMA/UFC: total rounds. A fight expected to end early shortens the under on rounds.
Pinnacle Terminal grades pre-match moves in 13 sports, including football, tennis, basketball and MMA/UFC.
Why do totals odds drop?
Totals react to anything that changes the expected amount of scoring:
- Team and player news. A first-choice striker or a high-usage guard ruled out lowers the expected score; a weak goalkeeper starting raises it.
- Conditions. Heavy rain or strong wind in football, altitude or a slow court elsewhere. Conditions move totals far more than they move the result.
- Informed money. Bettors Pinnacle respects take a side, and the book moves price, line and often limit together.
- Correlated markets. If the favourite shortens hard in the result market, the total can follow, because a one-sided game changes the scoring expectation. That second move is the same information, not new information.
Price drop or line move: what is the difference?
A totals market can move in two ways, and lists of dropping odds mix them.
A price move keeps the number and changes the odds: under 2.75 from 1.97 to 1.88. The line is the same; the market now rates the under as more likely.
A line move changes the number itself: the main total goes from 2.75 to 2.5, or from 221.5 to 218.5 points. A line move is the larger event, because every bet on the old number is now priced against a different distribution of outcomes.
Books usually move the price first and the line once the price has gone far enough. In basketball, where a single absence can move a total by several points, the line often jumps directly.
How do you measure an over/under drop?
Convert both prices to implied probability before comparing anything. Percentage drops flatter long prices and understate short ones; probability points do not.
Totals are two-way markets, so the margin is easy to remove. A worked example with illustrative numbers, not a real match:
- Pinnacle opens over 2.5 at 2.05, under 2.5 at 1.84. The raw probabilities add up to 103.1%, so the margin is about 3.1%. With the power devig method, the fair under price is about 1.893 (52.8%).
- News arrives and Pinnacle moves to over 2.22, under 1.72. The fair under is now about 1.765 (56.6%).
- Your bookmaker still shows under 2.5 at 1.85. Against the new fair price, 1.85 × 0.5665 − 1 ≈ +4.8% modelled edge. Against the opening fair price, the same 1.85 was about −2.3%.
The drop is what turned an ordinary price into a positive expected value one. Check your own numbers with the devig calculator (Power is the default method in Pinnacle Terminal) and the EV calculator.
Real examples: football totals drops in probability

| Match (kick-off) | Selection | From → now | Drop in odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lyon v Angers (1 Nov, 17:15) | Under 3.0 goals | 1.95 → 1.81 | 7.2% | 51.28% → 55.25% (+3.97 pts) |
| FC Copenhagen v FC Iberia 1999 (5 Nov, 21:00) | Under 3.25 goals | 1.99 → 1.88 | 5.5% | 50.25% → 53.19% (+2.94 pts) |
| Athletic Bilbao v Real Sociedad (1 Nov, 21:00) | Under 2.75 goals | 1.97 → 1.88 | 4.6% | 50.76% → 53.19% (+2.43 pts) |
| Union Berlin v 1. FC Köln (1 Nov, 15:30) | Under 2.75 goals | 2.11 → 2.01 | 4.7% | 47.39% → 49.75% (+2.36 pts) |
| Villarreal v Paris Saint-Germain (3 Nov, 21:00) | Over 3.5 goals | 1.96 → 1.89 | 3.6% | 51.02% → 52.91% (+1.89 pts) |
Two things stand out. The Union Berlin and Athletic drops are almost the same size in odds (4.7% and 4.6%) and almost the same in probability, because both prices sit near even money; on totals, the two measures only diverge once a price moves away from 2.0. And none of these rows says why the price moved, how fast, or what the limit did. Those are the facts that decide whether a totals drop is worth acting on.
What does a drop on a quarter or whole line mean?
Football totals use three kinds of line, and the settlement changes what a drop is worth:
- Half lines (2.5, 3.5). Win or lose; no refunds.
- Whole lines (3.0). Exactly three goals returns the stake. An under 3.0 shortening means the market sees two goals or fewer as more likely, with three goals as a refund.
- Quarter lines (2.75, 3.25). The stake is split across the two neighbouring lines. Under 2.75 is half on under 2.5 and half on under 3.0, so exactly three goals loses half and refunds half.
When comparing a drop at Pinnacle with your bookmaker's price, compare the same line. An under 2.75 at Pinnacle and an under 2.5 at your bookmaker are different bets, and an apparent edge can disappear once the settlement is matched.
How do you tell a real totals move from noise?
Four checks specific to totals, on top of the six in how to read odds movement:
- Read both sides. Devig the over and the under together. If the under shortened but the over barely drifted, the book may have raised its margin rather than changed its view.
- Look at the neighbouring lines. A real totals move shifts the whole ladder: 2.5, 2.75 and 3.0 should all move in the same direction. A lone move on one line is weaker evidence.
- Weigh the limit and the league. A drop on a low maximum stake can be a handful of small bets; see low-limit odds moves. A drop together with a raised maximum market limit is a stronger signal (market limit vs outcome limit).
- Check the timing. Totals moves in the last hour before kick-off in football often follow confirmed line-ups; early-week moves are more often corrections of a soft opener.
Pre-match vs in-play totals drops
In-play, the under shortens on its own as the clock runs with no goals. That is the game, not a signal, so in-play totals need a context filter. In Pinnacle Terminal, in-play drops are football only: they are shown live and filtered by match context (score, recent goals, the minutes right after a goal), but they are not graded. The 0–10 grade applies to pre-match moves. More on the in-play drops page.
How Pinnacle Terminal handles over/under drops
Pinnacle Terminal streams Pinnacle's prices and limits live, totals included. Every pre-match move is graded 0–10 and labelled: Big move (the odds dropped and Pinnacle closed the market), Sharp drop (approximately 20% or more below the recent high), Limit-backed (the odds drop and Pinnacle raises its maximum market limit), Downtrend, Rebound (the odds return towards the opener) and Standard. Moves are measured over a 2-minute window by default, which you can change, and each alert shows the fair price.
In basketball, the Basketball lines tab alerts you when the main total or spread moves 3 or more points in under 2 minutes. Telegram alerts are configured per user, so you can follow totals only, or one sport only. The terminal keeps no line history: it shows moves as they happen. See everything on the Pinnacle dropping odds page; for the result and handicap markets in football, read football dropping odds.
FAQ
What are over/under dropping odds?
Totals prices that get shorter before a match, such as an under 3.0 goals going from 1.95 to 1.81. The market now expects less (or more) scoring than it did.
What does a dropping under mean?
The market now rates a low-scoring game as more likely. Common causes are an attacking player ruled out, bad weather, or money the bookmaker respects on the under.
Is a price drop the same as a line move?
No. A price drop keeps the number (under 2.75) and changes the odds. A line move changes the number itself, for example from 2.75 to 2.5 goals, and is usually the bigger event.
Are totals drops more reliable than match-result drops?
Not in general. Both are the market's updated estimate, not a result. What makes any drop stronger evidence is the context: the limit, a market lock, and whether the neighbouring lines moved too.
Does Pinnacle Terminal grade in-play totals moves?
No. In-play drops are football only, shown live and filtered by match context but not graded. The 0–10 grade applies to pre-match moves in 13 sports.
