Bookmakers release odds on a rolling basis, not at a fixed time: in the sample we checked on 1 November 2026, Pinnacle's first prices for Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Champions League and Europa League matches appeared about 12 to 15 days before kick-off, Serie A about 6 to 7 days before, and midweek Championship matches 3 to 5 days before. A newly opened price carries a wider margin and a low limit, so it moves more in its first days than at any later point except the hour before kick-off.
The question "when do odds come out?" matters for two reasons. If you want the earliest price, you need to know when it appears. And if you follow dropping odds, a market that opened yesterday behaves differently from one that has been open for two weeks: much of its early movement is the price finding its level, not news. This page gives the dated data, explains why openers are different and shows how to read a drop from the opening line.
Definition. The opening odds (or opener) are the first price a bookmaker publishes for a market. At a market-making book such as Pinnacle, the opener is set by its traders or model on little or no money, offered with a low maximum stake and a wider margin, and then corrected as bets arrive. The time a market opens is its release time.
When does Pinnacle release football odds?
For the top European competitions, roughly two weeks before kick-off. We read the match pages of SteamWatch, a public tracker that records Pinnacle's 1X2, Asian handicap and totals prices every 15 minutes, on 1 November 2026. For each of the 50 matches on its dropping-odds list, the page states when the tracker recorded its first pre-match 1X2 price:
| Competition | Matches checked | First price recorded before kick-off | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premier League | 7 | 12.8–15.0 days | Crystal Palace v Liverpool (8 Nov): first price 25 Oct, 20:34 UTC |
| La Liga | 4 | 12.0–14.0 days | Athletic Bilbao v Real Sociedad (1 Nov): 18 Oct, 19:37 UTC |
| Bundesliga | 4 | 12.7–13.9 days | Mainz v Bayern Munich (7 Nov): 25 Oct, 20:34 UTC |
| Ligue 1 | 6 | 13.7–13.9 days | Rennes v Lille (8 Nov): 25 Oct, 20:36 UTC |
| Champions League | 5 | 12.9–13.9 days | Atlético Madrid v Bayern Munich (3 Nov): 21 Oct, 23:04 UTC |
| Europa League | 2 | 13.2 days | Celtic v Beşiktaş (5 Nov): 23 Oct, 16:24 UTC |
| Conference League | 10 | 5.0–9.9 days (7 of 10: 7.2–7.3 days) | Riga v Jablonec (5 Nov): 29 Oct, 14:02 UTC |
| Serie A | 5 | 6.1–7.0 days | Napoli v Lazio (8 Nov): 1 Nov, 11:00 UTC |
| Championship (midweek round) | 6 | 3.2–4.8 days | Watford v Lincoln City (3 Nov): 31 Oct, 13:00 UTC |

Three patterns stand out:
- Top leagues open in batches, two rounds ahead. Every Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 match in the sample kicking off on 1–2 November first appeared on the evening of Sunday 18 October (19:19–19:37 UTC); every one kicking off on 6–8 November first appeared on Sunday 25 October (15:06–20:52 UTC). When one weekend finishes, the round after next opens. Serie A ran a round behind: its 7–8 November matches appeared on 1 November.
- European club competitions open after the previous matchday. Champions League matchday 4 prices appeared late on 21 October, as matchday 3 finished; Europa League prices followed on 23 October.
- Smaller competitions open later. Most Conference League matches for 5 November appeared on 29 October, about a week out, and two only on 31 October.
One outlier: Liverpool v Manchester United (22 November) was already on the tracker on 25 October, 28 days early. Big fixtures can open well ahead of their round.
Is the first recorded price the real opening time?
Not exactly. A tracker records when it first saw a price, which depends on when it started following that league and how often it polls. Treat these figures as "open by", not as the minute Pinnacle published the market. They are still consistent across competitions, and they match what other public sources report:
- OddsPapi (blog post of 25 August 2026) found Pinnacle quoting the 2026/27 Bundesliga opener, Bayern v Stuttgart, from 6 July, 53 days before kick-off, and the Premier League opener 63 days out. Its explanation: books open one round at a time, and season openers are the exception they price early.
- football-data.co.uk (25 August 2017), comparing 147,629 Pinnacle opening prices with bet365, noted that bet365 often had prices up before Pinnacle opened its market, and that extreme bet365 prices were bet away in that window.
Do other bookmakers release odds earlier than Pinnacle?
Often, yes, for the main result market. Retail bookmakers commonly list popular weekend matches during the week before, sometimes earlier, as UK betting guides describe. They usually start with the match result and add goals, corners, cards and player markets later; some specialist markets appear only on matchday.
Pinnacle's opener is different in kind, not just in time. It is a market-making price: low limits at first, then raised as the price is tested. A retail opener is more often a copy of the market adjusted for the book's own customers. That is why the useful question is not just "when do odds open?" but "when does the sharp price open, and how far is it from my bookmaker's?" See sharp vs soft bookmakers.
Why does a new price have a wider margin?
Because the bookmaker knows least about it. Of the 50 SteamWatch matches, 40 had first prices that look tradable; the 1X2 margin on those first prices had a median of 6.21% (range 4.40–8.69%). The ten matches kicking off on 1 November had margins of 2.36–3.66% on the same day. The other 10 first snapshots had margins between about 17% and 35%, which looks like a placeholder or feed artefact rather than a real price, so we left them out.
OddsPapi reported the same shape from the limit side: the Bundesliga opener 11 days out carried a 6.43% margin and a $250 base limit, against 3.73–4.35% margins and $750–$1,500 bases for openers 4 or 5 days out (25 August 2026). Margin and limit both track the time to kick-off. For how margin is calculated, see overround, vig and margin explained; for how limits grow, see Pinnacle limits explained.
How do you read a drop from the opening price?
Remove the margin from both prices first. A raw comparison against a wide-margin opener mixes two things: the market changing its mind, and the margin shrinking. Example, Strasbourg v Auxerre (Ligue 1, 1 November), SteamWatch prices:
| Strasbourg | Draw | Auxerre | Margin | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First price, 18 Oct | 1.79 | 3.94 | 3.96 | 6.50% |
| 1 Nov, 13:42 UTC | 1.93 | 3.96 | 3.91 | 2.64% |
| Fair, first (power devig) | 1.86 | 4.31 | 4.34 | 0 |
| Fair, 1 Nov (power devig) | 1.96 | 4.10 | 4.05 | 0 |
The raw draw price went from 3.94 to 3.96: it looks flat. With the margin removed it shortened from 4.31 to 4.10, from 23.2% to 24.4% fair probability. The raw Auxerre move (3.96 to 3.91) understates a fair move from 4.34 to 4.05. Fair prices calculated by us with the power method, the default in Pinnacle Terminal; run your own in the devig calculator, and size the change with the odds drop calculator.
The same trap appears in Champions League dropping odds, where UCL openers carry wider margins than domestic closers, and in Europa League and Conference League dropping odds.
What should you do with a newly opened price?
Treat it as a draft. Four rules:
- Expect the first days to move. A two-week-old Premier League price has absorbed far more money than a Conference League price that opened yesterday. Early moves are often corrections, not news.
- Size moves in fair probability. Raw percentage changes against an opener overstate or hide moves, as above.
- Respect the limit. A drop on an opener with a low limit can be a handful of small bets; the same drop after Pinnacle raises the limit says more. See market limit vs outcome limit.
- Compare like with like. If the handicap or total line changed since opening, the opening and current prices are different bets. More in opening line vs closing line.
How Pinnacle Terminal handles new markets
The terminal follows Pinnacle's live prices and limits in 13 sports, so a market shows up as soon as Pinnacle offers it. What it adds to a fresh opener is context. Each pre-match move gets a 0–10 grade and a label: a drop where Pinnacle then takes the market down is a Big move; a fall of roughly 20% or more from the recent high is a Sharp drop; a drop where Pinnacle also lifts its maximum market limit, the clearest sign the book trusts the new price, is Limit-backed; the rest are Downtrend, Rebound (back towards the opener) or Standard. On a two-day-old market, that limit label is what separates a tested move from early correction. The default window is 2 minutes and you can widen or narrow it. Alerts carry the fair price (Power devig by default), so margin compression on a new market is visible as such. There is no stored price history in the terminal; if you want the opener of a market for later, note it when it appears. Telegram alerts are set per user, so you can watch only the competitions whose markets open early. More on the Pinnacle dropping odds page.
FAQ
When do bookmakers release odds for weekend football?
It varies by bookmaker and league. On the data above, Pinnacle had top European league matches up about 12 to 15 days before kick-off, usually on the Sunday evening two rounds ahead. Serie A appeared about a week out. Retail books often list the main result market during the week before.
When do Champions League odds come out?
In the 2026/27 league phase, Pinnacle's matchday 4 prices appeared on 21 October, just after matchday 3 finished, about 13 days before the 3 and 4 November matches.
Why are opening odds different from closing odds?
Opening odds are set on little information and money, with a wider margin and a low limit. Closing odds have absorbed every bet and news item up to kick-off. Research such as football-data.co.uk's found Pinnacle's openers already close to true probabilities, but the close is the stronger benchmark.
Is it better to bet at the opening odds?
Not automatically. An early price can be better or worse than the close. What matters is whether your price beats Pinnacle's fair closing price, measured as closing line value. Early limits are also low, so the stake you can get on an opener is small.
Do odds drop more right after they open?
Often, yes. A new price is corrected as bets arrive, and the margin narrows over time. Remove the margin before reading a drop from the opener, or you may count margin compression as a move.
