Dropping Odds Alert Threshold: What Minimum Drop to Use

What minimum drop to set for dropping odds alerts: why 10% and 20% mean different things by price, how the time window and limit change it, and how to tune it.

There is no single best minimum drop for dropping odds alerts: the right threshold is the smallest drop that still beats your own bookmaker's price gap plus the sharp book's margin, measured over a short time window. For a bookmaker that usually prices a few percent below Pinnacle, that works out at roughly 7–11% on a fast drop; a 20% threshold is a filter for rare, large moves, not a requirement for value.

Alert tools publish very different starting points, from 5% to 30%. This page explains why they disagree, converts each threshold into probability points by price range, shows the arithmetic behind a sensible floor, and gives a one-week method to tune your own setting.

Definition. A dropping odds alert threshold (or minimum drop) is the smallest fall in price, usually in percent, that makes an alert fire. It only means something together with three other settings: the reference price (opener, recent high or start of a time window), the time window the fall is measured over, and the odds range it applies to.

What minimum drop do alert tools suggest?

Five public suggestions, read on 2 November 2026:

SourceSuggested minimum dropContext given on the page
Pinnacle Odds Dropper guide5%–15%, not below 5%; about 10% for low-limit, high-margin marketsDrop measured on prices with the margin still in
FairOdds Terminal manual8–10% for beginners, 5–8% "standard", 10–15% "niche" marketsOdds range 1.5–3.0 suggested for a start
OddAlerts (Pinnacle alerts FAQ)"Around 20% suits most people"10% sends far more alerts; 30%+ only big moves
PinnWire API docs5% default, configurable down to 1%Records only falls of 1% or more
Public Telegram channels reposting OddsPortal20% and 30%, odds up to 2.3No time window stated

The spread is not a contradiction. Tools that measure over a short window can use a lower number, because a 10% fall in two minutes is a fast move. Tools and channels that measure from the opener or over hours need a higher one, because slow drift adds up. A threshold copied from one tool to another without its window is a different setting. Which reference price each tracker uses is covered in how dropping odds are calculated.

Why does the same percentage mean different things at different odds?

Because a percentage fall in price is not the same change in probability. The table shows how many points of implied probability each threshold represents at four prices:

Price before5% drop10% drop15% drop20% drop
1.501.425 (+3.5 pts)1.35 (+7.4 pts)1.275 (+11.8 pts)1.20 (+16.7 pts)
2.001.90 (+2.6 pts)1.80 (+5.6 pts)1.70 (+8.8 pts)1.60 (+12.5 pts)
3.002.85 (+1.8 pts)2.70 (+3.7 pts)2.55 (+5.9 pts)2.40 (+8.3 pts)
5.004.75 (+1.1 pts)4.50 (+2.2 pts)4.25 (+3.5 pts)4.00 (+5.0 pts)

Calculated by us: points = 1 ÷ new price − 1 ÷ old price. A 20% threshold on a 1.50 favourite asks for a 16.7-point swing, which is very rare outside news such as an injury or a lineup. The same 20% on a 5.00 outsider is a 5-point move. One threshold across all prices therefore fires too rarely on short prices and too often on long ones. Two fixes work:

  1. Narrow the odds range. This is why many channels cap odds at 2.3 or 3.0.
  2. Set different thresholds per odds band, for example a lower minimum below 2.00 and a higher one above 3.00.

Check any pair of prices in the odds drop calculator, which shows the percentage and the probability change.

How low can the threshold go before an alert is worthless?

An alert is only worth acting on if your bookmaker's price is still above the sharp book's new fair price. That gives a floor you can work out. Assume your bookmaker usually prices a selection a fraction k of Pinnacle's price before the drop (k = 0.96 means 4% lower), and Pinnacle's two-way margin is m. With the margin removed proportionally, the drop at which your bookmaker's old price is exactly fair is:

break-even drop = 1 − k ÷ (1 + m)

Your bookmaker vs Pinnacle before the dropPinnacle margin 2.5%3%5%
Same price (k = 1.00)2.4%2.9%4.8%
2% lower (k = 0.98)4.4%4.9%6.7%
4% lower (k = 0.96)6.3%6.8%8.6%
6% lower (k = 0.94)8.3%8.7%10.5%
8% lower (k = 0.92)10.2%10.7%12.4%

Our own arithmetic, multiplicative devig, illustrative only. Below the break-even drop, even an alert you catch instantly points to a price at or below fair. Above it, the extra drop is your margin for error in the fair price, for the time it takes you to place the bet, and for the bookmaker moving first. This is why the tool suggestions cluster between 5% and 15%: they sit just above the floor for most soft bookmakers on main markets. Higher-margin markets (lower leagues, props, early lines) push the floor up, which is the reasoning behind a 10% start for low-limit markets.

The table also shows why a lower threshold is not "more value". Going from 10% to 5% adds many alerts that sit at or under the floor for a typical soft bookmaker. Use the devig calculator to get the fair price from both sides of a real market, and the EV calculator to check the price you can actually get.

Which time window should a threshold use?

The time window decides what kind of move a threshold catches:

  • Short window (about 2 minutes): catches fast moves while they happen, before slower bookmakers copy them. A 10% fall inside two minutes is a strong signal. A long slow drift never fires.
  • Medium window (3–10 minutes): catches fast and moderately fast moves, at the cost of firing later on the fastest ones. Paid preset channels often use 3 or 10 minutes.
  • From the opener or over hours: reports how far a price has travelled. Useful for reading the market, usually too late to act on, and it needs a higher threshold because opening margins are wide.

Rule of thumb: keep the threshold and the window together. If you widen the window, raise the threshold. Why most late alerts never become a bet is explained in why dropping odds alerts don't convert.

Should the limit change the threshold?

Yes. A drop on a market with a low maximum limit can be moved by small money, so it carries less information than the same drop on a high-limit market. Two real cases from Pinnacle Terminal on 28 October 2026 (Madrid time, CET):

  • Lois Bernstein −1.5, ITF Women Taby: 3.52 to 2.88, an 18.18% drop (+6.3 probability points), with the maximum market limit flat at $225 for the whole fall. Labelled Sharp drop. A 20% threshold from the recent high would have fired; a 20% threshold over the last move alone would not.
  • Sean Daryabeigi −1.5, ITF Men Norman: 3.38 to 2.84, a 15.98% drop (+5.6 points), on a $50 limit, and the market locked. Labelled Big move. Pinnacle raised the limit to $150 only after the price had settled lower.

The percentages are close; what the markets were telling you was not. Add a minimum limit to your rules, or raise the threshold on low-limit markets. More in low-limit odds moves and Pinnacle limits explained.

Why can a big drop still be a bad alert?

A threshold measures size, not what happened next. On 28 October 2026 the over 172.5 points in BK Opava v TBB Trier fell from 2.22 to 1.806 on Pinnacle, an 18.65% drop (+10.3 points), with a $250 limit that never moved. Minutes later the price was back at 2.01 and the move was relabelled Rebound. Any threshold below 18% would have fired. The useful information was that the limit stayed flat and half the move came back. The case is in odds that bounce back after a drop.

How do you tune your threshold in one week?

  1. Start just above your floor. Use the break-even table with your main bookmaker. For most main-market football and tennis that means 7–10% over a short window.
  2. Run two settings side by side for seven days if your tool allows it, for example 8% and 12%.
  3. For each alert, log: the time, the sharp price after the drop, your bookmaker's price when you checked, and whether that price beat the fair price.
  4. Count three numbers per setting: alerts per day, the share where your bookmaker still had a price above fair, and the average closing line value of the bets you placed. The CLV calculator does it per bet.
  5. Keep the setting with the best CLV that you can physically keep up with. If you miss half the alerts, raise the threshold or narrow the leagues; a lower threshold you cannot act on adds nothing.

Judge the week on CLV, not on results. Seven days of results is noise.

How Pinnacle Terminal handles this

Pinnacle Terminal measures each drop over a 2-minute window by default, which you can widen or narrow, and your private Telegram bot applies your own rules: drop size, odds range, sport, league, market and move type. Because a percentage cannot tell a flat-limit bounce from a locked market, every pre-match move is also graded 0–10 and labelled: Big move (the odds dropped and Pinnacle closed the market), Sharp drop (roughly 20% or more from the recent high, not a hard cutoff), Limit-backed (the odds dropped and Pinnacle raised its maximum market limit), Downtrend, Rebound (the odds returning towards the opener) and Standard. A minimum grade works as a second threshold. The fair price in each alert uses Power devig by default and keeps updating. Live in-play drops cover football only and are shown live and filtered by goal and score context, not graded. The Basketball lines tab alerts when a main spread or total moves 3 or more points in under 2 minutes, with a lock icon when Pinnacle has moved the line but does not offer the market yet. The terminal does not keep odds or line history. Setup steps are in create alert rules; the screen is described on Pinnacle dropping odds.

FAQ

What is a good minimum drop for dropping odds alerts?

For a short window on main markets, roughly 7–11% clears the break-even drop for a bookmaker that prices 4–8% below Pinnacle. Published suggestions on 2 November 2026 ranged from 5% (Pinnacle Odds Dropper, PinnWire default) to around 20% (OddAlerts).

Is a 20% dropping odds threshold too high?

It depends on the window and the price. Over two minutes, 20% catches only rare, large moves. Measured from the opener, it fires much more often. At 1.50 a 20% drop is 16.7 probability points; at 5.00 it is 5.0.

Should I use a lower threshold for favourites?

Usually yes. The same percentage is a larger probability change at short prices: 10% from 1.50 is 7.4 points, 10% from 3.00 is 3.7 points. A lower threshold below 2.00 and a higher one above 3.00 balances that.

Does a lower threshold give more value bets?

No. It gives more alerts. Below the break-even drop for your bookmaker, an alert points to a price at or under fair even if you act at once.

Should the drop be measured with or without the margin?

Most tools measure the raw price drop with the margin in. That is fine for the trigger. Before you bet, compare your price with Pinnacle's fair price with the margin removed.
