Championship dropping odds are prices on English second-tier matches that shorten between the opening line and kick-off, such as Middlesbrough away at Wrexham falling from 1.93 to 1.75 at Pinnacle between Saturday 31 October and Monday 2 November 2026. Championship prices open later than top-flight prices (about 7 days before a Saturday match and 3 to 4 days before a midweek one), keep a margin of around 5% until the day of the match, and move most in the final 24 hours. So remove the margin before you read any Championship move, and expect the midweek price to be rebuilt the moment the weekend round ends.
This page covers why the second tier prices differently, when its markets open, how last Saturday's matches moved from opener to close, this week's midweek moves with the margin removed, the feed errors that create fake drops, and how to test your own bookmaker's price. The general football picture is in football dropping odds; the top flight is in Premier League dropping odds.
Definition. Championship dropping odds = an EFL Championship price (1X2, Asian handicap or total goals) that is now shorter than it was at an earlier reference point, normally Pinnacle's opener. Because the Championship margin stays high until matchday, the drop is measured in no-vig probability: take the margin out of the old and the new price, then compare.
Why are Championship odds different from Premier League odds?
Three things set the Championship apart for anyone reading price moves.
- The calendar is dense. Twenty-four clubs play 46 league matches each, so a Saturday round is often followed by a Tuesday and Wednesday round. The 3–4 November round sits three days after the 31 October round.
- The pricing window is short. A short window leaves less time for the price to settle before kick-off.
- The margin stays higher for longer. Pinnacle prices the Championship with a wider margin than the top five leagues right up to matchday, so more of any raw price change is margin rather than money.
The rest of this page measures each of these with public Pinnacle prices.
When do Championship odds open?
About 7 days before a Saturday match and 3 to 4 days before a midweek one. In the public Pinnacle tracker SteamWatch, the 11 Championship matches played on Saturday 31 October 2026 first appeared 166 to 168 hours before kick-off, on Saturday 24 October. Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 matches on the same weekend opened about 13 days ahead.
The midweek round opened while the weekend round was still being played. Valid prices for the twelve 3–4 November matches first appeared between 13:00 and 15:36 UTC on Saturday 31 October: 3.2 days before the Tuesday kick-offs and 4.2 days before the Wednesday ones. All league-by-league opening times are in when do odds open.
What that means in practice:
- The opener is not built on the weekend's results. A midweek price set at 15:00 on Saturday cannot know what happens in that afternoon's matches. It is a placeholder until the results are in.
- The first big repricing comes on Saturday evening. We looked for the single largest snapshot-to-snapshot change (margin removed) on each midweek match. On 8 of the 11 matches that moved at all, it came on Saturday 31 October between 15:20 and 21:28 UTC, during or right after the weekend round. Bristol City v Wolverhampton Wanderers barely moved (0.2 points).
- Line-ups come last. Starting line-ups arrive shortly before kick-off, when limits are highest and the closing line forms.
How much do Championship odds move before kick-off?
Late, like the Premier League. Our sample is the 11 Championship matches of Saturday 31 October 2026, with Pinnacle 1X2 prices from SteamWatch's public archive and the margin stripped by the power method. We cut each match's price path at 24 hours, 6 hours and 1 hour before kick-off and summed the movement inside each window. 65% of the Championship's movement came in the last 24 hours, against 64% in the Premier League, 66% in the Bundesliga and 47% in Serie A on the same weekend. The method and the full 49-match sample are in why odds change before kick-off.
| Championship match, 31 Oct 2026 | Outcome | Raw odds, first → last | No-vig probability | Book margin, first → last |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southampton v Queens Park Rangers | Queens Park Rangers | 4.83 → 3.44 | 18.4% → 28.0% (+9.7 pts) | 6.98% → 3.14% |
| West Ham United v West Bromwich Albion | West Ham United | 1.56 → 1.82 | 62.1% → 53.9% (−8.2 pts) | 6.59% → 3.34% |
| Millwall v Derby County | Millwall | 1.74 → 1.66 | 55.4% → 59.1% (+3.7 pts) | 6.48% → 3.48% |
| Norwich City v Watford | Norwich City | 1.64 → 1.61 | 58.9% → 61.1% (+2.1 pts) | 6.47% → 3.34% |
What the data shows:
- The biggest move came early. Southampton v QPR moved most: 14.5 points across the three outcomes. Only 44% of it came in the final 24 hours; Southampton had already drifted from 1.58 to 1.84 before the last day. West Ham v West Brom was the opposite: 75% of its 8.2-point move came on the last day.
- The last hour was busier than in most leagues. The median last-hour move was 1.59 points of fair probability, against 1.47 in the Premier League and 0.99 in the Bundesliga. Norwich v Watford is the extreme case: Norwich were backed to 1.47 about 80 minutes before kick-off, then went out to 1.61 at the close, a 5.8-point move in the last hour.
- The margin closed higher. The 11 closing 1X2 margins sat between 2.98% and 3.81%, median 3.34%. The Premier League closed at a median 2.56%, the Bundesliga at 2.57%.
One Saturday of 11 matches is a small sample. Treat these figures as a working hypothesis and re-test them on the next rounds.
What is the margin on Championship odds?
Higher than the top flight at every stage, and it comes down late. Median 1X2 margins at Pinnacle on 31 October 2026, from the same archive:
| Point in time | Championship | Premier League | Bundesliga | Serie A |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opener | 6.50% | 6.16% | 6.36% | 6.36% |
| 24 hours before kick-off | 5.19% | 3.44% | 3.46% | 3.18% |
| Close | 3.34% | 2.56% | 2.57% | 2.67% |
The gap is widest the day before the match. At 24 hours out, a Championship 1X2 still carries about 5%; the top leagues are already at about 3.5%. The midweek round shows the same picture: on 2 November, one to two days before kick-off, the twelve 3–4 November markets sat at 4.55% to 5.17%.
Why it matters: when the margin is cut, every price lengthens a little at once. A Championship price that drifts on matchday morning may simply be the margin coming down. Strip it first with the devig calculator; how the margin is built is in overround, vig and margin explained.

What the table shows:
- Middlesbrough moved in steps. From 1.93 on Saturday afternoon to 1.81 by 20:08 UTC that evening, 1.72 by Sunday lunchtime, then back to 1.75 on Monday. Wrexham drifted from 3.64 to 4.20 and the draw from 3.74 to 4.13: the market moved away from both. We do not know the reason; SteamWatch shows the price, not the money behind it.
- West Ham drifted twice. The price went from 1.83 to 1.95 on Saturday evening and from 1.93 to 2.02 on Monday afternoon, in one snapshot between 13:00 and 15:40 UTC. Two days earlier, West Ham had drifted from 1.56 to 1.82 before their home match with West Brom. Some teams get repriced round after round; read each move on its own.
- Half the round barely moved. Six of the twelve matches moved less than 1 point of fair probability after 16:08 UTC on Saturday. On those, the raw price changes are mostly the margin coming down.
Data errors to watch for
Not every snapshot is a price. Before the midweek round settled, several SteamWatch histories carried 1X2 sets whose implied probabilities added up to 125% to 134%: 78 snapshots on QPR v Burnley, 52 on Wrexham v Middlesbrough and 2 on Cardiff v West Ham. On Wrexham v Middlesbrough the draw showed 2.30 on Saturday morning, then 3.84 once valid prices arrived. Portsmouth v Swansea carried a book of about 9–11% (for example 2.60 / 3.90 / 2.14) from late on 29 October until the morning of 31 October, well above a normal Championship opener. For the midweek figures on this page we dropped every snapshot above a 108% book. Any tracker that compares against such a snapshot will report a "drop" that never happened; check the sum of the three implied probabilities before you trust a big Championship move.
Which Championship market moves most?
The match result carried most of this week's moves, but the handicap and total lines also shifted. Between the first valid snapshot and Monday evening, these main lines changed:
| Match | Market | Opening line → Monday line |
|---|---|---|
| Wrexham v Middlesbrough | Asian handicap, Wrexham | +0.5 → +0.75 |
| Wrexham v Middlesbrough | Total goals | 2.75 → 3.0 |
| Cardiff City v West Ham United | Asian handicap, Cardiff | +0.75 → +0.5 |
| Watford v Lincoln City | Asian handicap, Watford | −0.25 → 0 |
| Portsmouth v Swansea City | Asian handicap, Portsmouth | −0.25 → 0 |
| Birmingham City v Millwall | Total goals | 2.75 → 2.5 |
Read the line, not the price, when the line changes. On Wrexham v Middlesbrough, the handicap moved from Wrexham +0.5 to +0.75 and the total from 2.75 to 3.0: the market now expects Middlesbrough to win by more and the match to have more goals. A price on +0.75 cannot be compared with a price on +0.5. Quarter lines are explained in Asian handicap explained and goals lines in over/under dropping odds.
Handicap and 1X2 moving together confirm the move. Watford's handicap went from −0.25 to level and Lincoln's 1X2 fair probability rose 3.4 points. Both markets say the same thing about the same match.
Main totals on the twelve midweek matches ranged from 2.25 goals (Blackburn v Stoke) to 3.5 (Cardiff v West Ham).
Is there still value after a Championship drop?
Only if your bookmaker's price is still higher than Pinnacle's current no-vig price. The opener is history; the comparison that counts is with the fair price at the moment you bet.
Worked example with Monday's Wrexham v Middlesbrough prices (4.20 / 4.13 / 1.75). Middlesbrough's fair price is about 1.803. Two illustrative bookmaker prices, not quotes from a real bookmaker:
| Your bookmaker's price on Middlesbrough | Expected value against fair 1.803 |
|---|---|
| 1.85 | about +2.6% (1.85 ÷ 1.803 − 1) |
| 1.72 | about −4.6% |
If your bookmaker shows 1.80 or less, the Middlesbrough move has reached it and there is no edge at that price. Two Championship-specific checks:
- Check after the margin cut. With the margin near 5% until matchday, a price that looks generous on Monday can be ordinary once Pinnacle cuts the margin on Wednesday. Re-check on matchday.
- Check the limit. A move on a low limit says less than the same move on a high one, because a single bet can cause it. How to read that is in low-limit odds moves.
The four steps, each with its own tool: fair price from the devig calculator; edge from the EV calculator; size of the move in percent and probability points from the odds drop calculator; and, once the match is over, your price against the fair close in the CLV calculator. Where to set an alert threshold is in dropping odds alert threshold.
What about live Championship drops?
Once the match starts, most price changes are mechanical: each scoreless minute shortens the under, and each goal or red card re-prices every market at once. Pinnacle Terminal's in-play view is football only, so Championship matches are covered: live drops appear as Pinnacle makes them, filtered by the score and by a goal just scored, and they carry no 0–10 grade, which is reserved for pre-match moves. How to separate time decay from a real live move is in in-play odds movement.
How Pinnacle Terminal handles Championship moves
The Championship's problem is timing. Midweek prices get rebuilt on Saturday evening, while you are still reading the weekend's results, and most of the movement comes on matchday. Pinnacle Terminal follows Pinnacle's feed over a WebSocket, so a Championship move shows on screen as it happens, with Pinnacle's maximum market limit next to the price. Every pre-match move on a match result, handicap or total gets a 0–10 grade and one label: Big move (the odds dropped and Pinnacle closed the market), Sharp drop (roughly 20% or more off the recent high), Limit-backed (the odds dropped and Pinnacle raised the limit), Downtrend, Rebound (heading back towards the opener) or Standard. Moves are measured over a 2-minute window by default, which you can change. Alerts go to your own Telegram bot with the fair price on the message (Power devig by default), and a league filter keeps them to fixtures your bookmaker lists. The terminal does not store odds history, which is why this page uses a public archive for the opener and close. More on Pinnacle dropping odds.
FAQ
What are Championship dropping odds?
A Championship price that is shorter now than at an earlier reference, usually the opener. On 2 November 2026, Pinnacle's price on Middlesbrough away at Wrexham (4 November) had fallen from 1.93 on Saturday afternoon to 1.75.
When do Championship odds come out?
About 7 days before a Saturday match and 3 to 4 days before a midweek match at Pinnacle, based on a public tracker. The 3–4 November 2026 round first showed valid prices between 13:00 and 15:36 UTC on 31 October.
What is the margin on Championship odds at Pinnacle?
In our 31 October 2026 sample, a median 6.50% at the opener, 5.19% 24 hours before kick-off and 3.34% at the close. The Premier League was at 3.44% 24 hours out and 2.56% at the close.
Why do midweek Championship odds move on a Saturday?
Because the midweek price opens before the weekend matches are played. Once the weekend results are in, the midweek price is rebuilt. On 8 of the 11 midweek matches that moved, the largest single step came on Saturday 31 October between 15:20 and 21:28 UTC.
Can I get Championship dropping odds alerts on Telegram?
Yes. Create a rule for the EFL Championship in Pinnacle Terminal, choose the markets and the minimum drop, and your private Telegram bot will message you each pre-match move that passes, grade included. Live in-play drops for Championship matches appear in the terminal, filtered by match state, without a grade.
