Betfair Money Way Explained: What Matched Money Shows

Betfair money way is the share of exchange money matched on each outcome. How it is calculated, what it cannot tell you, and 9 matches checked against Pinnacle.

Betfair money way is the share of the money matched on the Betfair Exchange that went on each outcome of a market, for example 94% of the 1X2 money on the home team. It shows where trading happened. It does not show who traded, which side started the trade, or whether the price was wrong, so read it next to a sharp bookmaker's price and never instead of one.

Money way is sold as a "follow the money" signal by scanners and Telegram channels. This page explains how the figure is built, why every euro on one outcome also has someone on the other side of it, and what money way looked like on nine EFL Championship matches on the morning of 3 November 2026, checked against Pinnacle's prices over the same 24 hours.

Disclosure: this is the Pinnacle Terminal blog. Our product shows Pinnacle prices and limits, not exchange volumes.

Definition. Money way (also "moneyway" or "money flow") is the matched volume on each selection of an exchange market, usually shown as a percentage of the market total. Matched money has already traded at an agreed price. It is different from weight of money, which is unmatched money still waiting on the order book and can be cancelled at any moment.

What is money way in betting?

It is a split of traded money. On an exchange, bettors back and lay outcomes against each other, and each matched bet adds to the total traded on that selection. Money way tools add up the 1X2 (or over/under) totals and show each outcome's share.

A typical row looks like this, from Bet-Mate's free money way page on 3 November 2026 at 07:49 UTC:

Queens Park Rangers v BurnleyQPRDrawBurnley
Matched (Bet-Mate shows €)34,3738691,197

Share implied by the price (no margin)48.6%25.7%25.7%
Money minus price+45.7 pts−23.3 pts−22.4 pts

The last row is the one most money way tools highlight: outcomes that attract more money than their price suggests.

How is money way calculated?

Two steps:

  1. Money share = money matched on the selection ÷ money matched on all selections of the market.
  2. Money minus price = money share − the selection's implied probability with the margin removed. Bet-Mate publishes its method: (1 ÷ price) ÷ the sum of 1 ÷ price across all outcomes, a multiplicative devig, with the result in percentage points.

For QPR: 1 ÷ 2.06 = 48.5%; the three Betfair prices add up to 99.8%, so QPR's normalised share is 48.6%. With 94.3% of the money, the difference is +45.7 points.

You can run the same devig on any three prices with the devig calculator.

Does money way show which side was backed?

No. An exchange bet is matched only when a backer meets a layer at the same price. A thread on Betfair's Developer Program forum spells it out: a £2 back bet that is matched is matched against someone laying the same selection at the same odds, so every matched amount has a backer and a layer behind it. So "€34,373 on QPR" means that much traded on the QPR selection. It does not say that €34,373 more was bet on QPR to win than against it.

What the number cannot tell you:

  • Who took the price. A backer hitting the lay side and a layer hitting the back side both add to the same total.
  • Who the money belongs to. Sharp, recreational and automated money look identical.
  • Whether the price was right. Lots of money can trade at a price that is too short.

What it can tell you: where trading activity is concentrated, and, read alongside the price history, which side was being taken while the price moved.

What did money way show on 3 November 2026?

We took Bet-Mate's money way for the nine EFL Championship matches of 3 November (read 07:49 UTC, about 12 hours before kick-off) and compared the most over-backed outcome in each with Pinnacle's 1X2 prices from SteamWatch over the previous 24 hours (07:49 UTC 2 November to 07:49 UTC 3 November). Pinnacle probabilities have the margin removed with the power method.

What the table shows:

  • The three biggest money excesses (QPR, Birmingham, Charlton) moved Pinnacle's fair probability by less than 1 point. Charlton's even drifted.
  • The over-backed side gained 1 point or more at Pinnacle in 3 of 9 matches (Lincoln, Norwich, Sheffield United).
  • The biggest Pinnacle move of the nine, Sheffield United from 2.11 to 1.99 (+3.3 points), came with one of the smallest money excesses (+4.5 points).

Nine matches on one morning prove nothing about money way in general. They do show that a big money share and a big price move are two different things, and that the size of one says little about the size of the other.

Why did 94% of the money go on QPR?

The prices suggest one plain reason. Twenty-four hours earlier, Betfair's back price on QPR was 2.16 while Pinnacle's fair price for QPR was 2.07 (2.00 with margin). After 2% commission, 2.16 pays like 2.14; after 5%, like 2.10. Both were above Pinnacle's fair price.

Money then traded on QPR and Betfair's price came down to 2.06, which pays 2.04 after 2% commission, just below Pinnacle's fair 2.05. Pinnacle's own price stayed between 2.00 and 2.02 across its 95 snapshots in those 24 hours.

Read together, the numbers fit an exchange price catching up with the sharp price, not a sharp price chasing exchange money. We cannot see who placed those bets, and the volume alone could never tell us. Pinnacle's price is what tells you whether the QPR money changed the market's estimate, and over these 24 hours it barely did. Commission formulas for Betfair and other exchanges are in our sharp bookmakers list.

When is money way useful, and when is it noise?

Useful:

  • On liquid markets close to kick-off, where many independent trades make up the total.
  • For spotting unusual activity, such as a lower-league match or a goals market trading far more than usual for its competition.
  • As context for a price move you have already seen, to check whether the move came with real trading.

Noise:

  • Thin markets. At €1,616 matched (Blackburn v Stoke), a few bets decide the split. Bet-Mate itself leaves its Volume Index empty below €1,000 of reference volume.
  • Early in the day. These figures were taken 12 hours before kick-off; most exchange volume trades later.
  • Popular teams. Well-known teams attract money on name alone.
  • Price gaps between venues. As with QPR, money pours in wherever the exchange price is better than the bookmakers', and that says more about the gap than about the outcome.

How do you use money way with Pinnacle's price?

  1. Start from the price, not the volume. Check whether Pinnacle's price moved, how far in probability points and in which window. The odds drop calculator converts a drop into points.
  2. Check whether the exchange price was out of line. Compare the exchange price after commission with Pinnacle's fair price. If the exchange was longer, heavy money on it may simply be the gap closing.
  3. Use the volume to judge depth. A move with real trading behind it on both venues is more solid than one on a few hundred euros.
  4. Bet only against the fair price. Whatever the money did, the question is whether your bookmaker's price is still above the fair price. The EV calculator does the check.

How Pinnacle Terminal handles this

Pinnacle Terminal does not show exchange volumes. It watches the other half of the picture: Pinnacle's own prices and limits across 13 sports, live. Every pre-match move is graded 0–10 and labelled: Big move when the odds dropped and Pinnacle closed the market, Sharp drop for a fall of roughly 20% or more from the recent high, Limit-backed when the odds dropped and Pinnacle raised its maximum market limit, and Downtrend, Rebound (back towards the opener) or Standard for the rest. Each drop is measured over a 2-minute window by default, which you can change. Live in-play football drops are shown as they happen and filtered by match context, without a grade. The Basketball lines tab flags main spreads and totals that move 3 or more points in under 2 minutes, with a lock icon when Pinnacle has moved the line but is not offering the market yet. Alerts go to your own Telegram bot with your filters and the fair price, using Power devig by default. The terminal works on live prices and keeps no odds or line history. If you also use a money way scanner, the terminal answers the question it cannot: did Pinnacle's price move? Full feature list: Pinnacle dropping odds.

FAQ

What does money way mean in betting?

It is the amount of money matched on each outcome of an exchange market, usually shown as a percentage of the total. On QPR v Burnley (3 November 2026, 07:49 UTC), 94.3% of the €36,439 matched on the 1X2 was on the QPR selection.

Is following the money way a good betting strategy?

Not on its own. Matched volume says where money traded, not who traded or whether the price was right. In our 9-match check, the three most over-backed sides moved Pinnacle's fair probability by less than 1 point. Use money way as context and judge every bet against a fair price.

Is money way the same as dropping odds?

No. Money way measures traded volume; dropping odds measure a change in price. A price can fall with little money (Sheffield United, +3.3 points with a +4.5 point money excess) and money can pour in without the sharp price moving (QPR).

Where can I see Betfair money way for free?

Some sites show it free with a delay or limits: Betwatch shows exchange volumes with a 10-minute delay on its free tier, and Bet-Mate shows a free money way page and sends free visitors' alerts 30 minutes late (both read 3 November 2026). The source in every case is the Betfair Exchange.

What is the difference between money way and weight of money?

Money way counts money that has already been matched. Weight of money compares unmatched offers waiting near the best back and lay prices, which can be cancelled in a second, so it is easier to fake and changes faster.
