Betfair Liquidity: Matched Volume vs Available Money

Betfair liquidity is the money still available at a price, not the matched total. How they differ, with Championship figures from 3 November 2026.

Betfair liquidity is the money still sitting on the exchange order book at (or near) a given price, which you can still match. Matched volume is the money that has already traded, at many prices, over the life of the market. A large matched total can sit next to a thin book. The last traded price is not a quote you can fill.

This page splits those two numbers, shows how Betfair's own API names them, and checks what that meant on nine EFL Championship 1X2 markets on the morning of 3 November 2026. Pinnacle's equivalent figure is not matched volume: it is the maximum market limit, the most it will take at the current prices.

Disclosure: this is the Pinnacle Terminal blog. Our product shows Pinnacle prices and limits, not exchange order books.

Definition. Matched volume is money that has already been backed and laid at an agreed price. Available liquidity is unmatched money still offered on the ladder (back and lay) at specific prices. Last traded price is the price of the most recent match; it can be a leftover from a price that is no longer offered in size.

What is Betfair liquidity?

It is how much you can still get on, at which prices, right now. On the Betfair Exchange that lives in the back and lay ladders. Betfair's Betting API returns it on listMarketBook as availableToBack and availableToLay per runner (price and size at each rung), and as totalAvailable for the whole market across the ladder. The same call returns totalMatched for money that has already traded, and lastPriceTraded for the last match on that runner.

Those three fields answer three different questions:

Field (Betfair listMarketBook)Question it answersCan it disappear?
totalMatchedHow much has already traded on this market or runner? No. It has traded.
totalAvailable / availableToBack / availableToLayHow much is still offered, and at which prices?Yes. Offers can be cancelled or matched.
lastPriceTradedWhat was the last price that matched? Not a live quote. The size behind it may already be gone.

Bet-Mate's Guide 3, read 4 November 2026, puts the same split in one sentence: a market with a large matched total can still have only a small amount available at the current best price, because the total built up over time and across many prices.

Matched volume is not available liquidity

Imagine a 1X2 with a large matched figure. That money traded at 2.20, then 2.10, then 2.02. Almost none of it has to be sitting at 2.02 now. If you hit 2.02, you match whatever is left on that rung, then the next worse price, and so on. The matched total does not cap or guarantee that walk down the ladder.

Two further traps:

  • Every matched bet has two sides. A backer and a layer. €10,000 matched on a selection is not €10,000 of extra money "on" that team. It is €10,000 that traded. Betfair money way is this split of matched money, not a queue you can join.
  • Volume is not a headcount. The same account can trade many times. Bet-Mate's guide says the figure does not show who traded or why.

Sorting by matched volume finds busy markets. It does not tell you whether the price on screen will still be there for your stake.

A thin book next to a busy one: 3 November 2026

We already published the matched 1X2 totals for the nine EFL Championship matches of 3 November 2026, taken from Bet-Mate at 07:49 UTC (about 12 hours before kick-off). Two rows from that table are enough to see the gap:

Match1X2 matched (€), 07:49 UTC 3 Nov 2026What that number is
QPR v Burnley36,439Busy. Most of it on QPR. Still not a quote: it had already traded.
Blackburn v Stoke1,616Thin. A few bets decide the money-way split.

Bet-Mate leaves its Volume Index empty when the 12-hour-before-kick-off reference is below €1,000 (methodology, read 4 November 2026). Blackburn–Stoke at €1,616 is only just above that floor, 12 hours out. We did not record how much was still available at the best back price on either market that morning, so we do not invent it. The point of the table is the matched totals we did record: one market had already traded more than twenty times the other, and even the busy one does not tell you the size left at 2.06.

If you want the price history of that Championship round at Pinnacle, it is in Championship dropping odds.

How much can you actually match?

On an exchange, walk the ladder:

  1. Read the best back (or lay) price and the size on that rung.
  2. If your stake is larger than that size, the rest hits the next price, which is worse.
  3. Commission comes off after the match. Bet-Mate's default example (methodology, read 4 November 2026): 2.00 at 5% pays like 1.95. Formula: 1 + (price − 1) × (1 − commission).
  4. Compare the worst price you would actually get with a sharp fair price, not with the last traded price.

A last traded price of 2.10 with €20 left at 2.10 and €5,000 at 1.98 is not a 2.10 market for a €200 bet.

On a bookmaker the equivalent check is the maximum stake at the price on screen. Pinnacle publishes a maximum market limit and changes it during the day. That limit is the most it will take at the current prices, which is closer to available liquidity than to matched volume. A drop on a rising limit and a drop on a tiny limit are not the same evidence; see Pinnacle limits explained and low-limit odds moves.

Pinnacle's limit is a decision by the book. Exchange size is whatever other customers have left unmatched. Neither number is a prediction. Both tell you whether the price you can actually take is the price you saw.

When matched volume misleads

  • Hours before kick-off. Most exchange volume arrives later. The 07:49 UTC Championship snapshot was about 12 hours early.
  • Lower leagues and side markets. A quiet Under/Over next to a busy 1X2 is normal. Bet-Mate warns not to mix VOL 1X2 with VOL U/O.
  • After a move. The matched total includes the old prices. The liquidity that matters is what is left at the new price.
  • Screenshot tools. A money-way or dropping-odds row that shows only matched volume and a last price hides the ladder.

Use matched volume as context: unusual activity, a market that is too thin to trust, or confirmation that a price move had trading behind it. Then size the bet against what is still available, and against a fair price.

How do you use this with a Pinnacle drop?

  1. Start from Pinnacle's price and limit, not from exchange volume. Did the price move, by how many probability points, and did the maximum market limit rise or fall? How to read odds movement is the six-signal checklist; how to track sharp money is the sharp-money version.
  2. If you also read Betfair, check available size at the price you would actually take, after commission, not the matched total and not the last traded price.
  3. Bet only where your book still pays above the fair price. The EV calculator does the comparison. That is the value bet test, independent of how busy the exchange looks.

How Pinnacle Terminal handles this

Pinnacle Terminal does not show Betfair's ladder. It watches the bookmaker side of the same problem: Pinnacle's current prices and the maximum market limit on each line, live, across 13 sports. Every pre-match move is graded 0–10 and labelled: Big move when the odds dropped and Pinnacle closed the market, Sharp drop for a fall of roughly 20% or more from the recent high, Limit-backed when the odds dropped and Pinnacle raised its maximum market limit, and Downtrend, Rebound or Standard for the rest. Each drop is measured over a 2-minute window by default, which you can change. Live in-play football drops are shown as they happen and filtered by match context, without a grade. The Basketball lines tab flags main spreads and totals that move 3 or more points in under 2 minutes, with a lock icon when Pinnacle has moved the line but is not offering the market yet. Alerts go to your own Telegram bot with your filters and the fair price, using Power devig by default. The terminal works on live prices and keeps no odds or line history. FAQ

What is Betfair liquidity?

The money still available on the exchange at specific back and lay prices. It is the size on the ladder, not the matched total and not the last traded price.

Is matched volume the same as liquidity?

No. Matched volume has already traded, at many prices. Liquidity is what you can still match now. Bet-Mate's Guide 3 (read 4 November 2026) uses the same distinction.

Why were Betfair odds higher than Pinnacle on 3 November 2026?

On those nine Championship 1X2s, Betfair's back prices sat above Pinnacle's (Pinnacle's 1X2 margin that morning was about 3.5–3.9%; Betfair commission is extra). A higher exchange price is not extra liquidity. After commission, check whether the size at that price still clears a fair Pinnacle price.

How is this different from money way?

Money way is the split of money already matched on each selection. Liquidity is unmatched money still offered. One is history; the other is the book you can hit.

How does Pinnacle's limit compare?

Pinnacle's maximum market limit is the most it will take at the current prices. That is the bookmaker analogue of available size, not of matched volume. A rising limit during a drop is a Limit-backed signal in Pinnacle Terminal.
